Bath and Stonehenge
Mysterious Stone Circles, the Georgian Elegance of Bath and ‘the prettiest village in England’
Duration: 10 hours.

We visit two UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites on our trip to the West Country. For 5,000 years the megalithic standing stones of Stonehenge have remained a mystery, standing sentinel over the surrounding area, which is rich in History, Myths and Legends. The mystery of why Stonehenge was built is still argued over. What inspired its builders to move stones weighing up to 45 tons over such huge distances? Decide for yourself whether it was an astronomical calendar, religious temple or a Bronze Age burial ground.

We will travel across the beautiful countryside of Salisbury Plain to visit one of the prettiest villages in England. The village houses are all of typical Cotswold type, constructed in honey-coloured stone with thick walls and roofs made from split natural stone tiles. The properties are many hundreds of years old and are listed as ancient monuments. The village was the setting for the original film version of Doctor Dolittle (the one with Rex Harrison as the eccentric doctor, not the Eddie Murphy remake).

For lunch you may want to stop at a Country Inn in the tranquil and picturesque setting of the Chew valley near Bath. Converted from a row of charming miners' cottages, the Inn has a deservingly high reputation for the quality and choice of its food.

Bath boasts splendid Georgian architecture set against a backdrop of some of the most picturesque countryside in Britain. Its hot springs, Roman Baths, splendid Abbey and sweeping stone crescents have attracted visitors for centuries. After a panoramic drive around we will walk down the perfectly preserved streets and lanes, which still use the medieval street pattern within the old walled City. We will visit the Roman Baths that made the city famous and a trip to the Baths would not be complete without a visit to taste the waters or enjoy a tea, coffee or snack in the 18th century Pump Room, centre of Georgian entertainment in its day.

A visit to Salisbury to tour the Cathedral, a medieval church with England's tallest spire, could be included in this tour by spending less time at Bath.
